Easter Trip 2001
By Paul & Beverley Krebs
from August 2001

Bev and I loaded up the bike on Good Friday morning. We were on the road by 10.00 am. Lunch break was at the famous Nimmitabell pie shop. When we came out a bloke had just pulled up on a R75/6. The bike and the rider were immaculate. He was on his way to Moss Vale [from Melbourne] where he was to meet up with his mate. They were on their way to USA taking two R80 GS's, to use to tour around. Half their luck.

We then went down Brown Mt to Tathra. We had a look at the old wharf where I had done a lot of fishing when a young lad, which was a few years ago! The next thing to do was find the caravan park where we set up the tent. Bev and I went for a walk along the beach. The day ended at the Bowling Club for tea. No win in the meat raffles!

We headed off the next morning for Lakes Entrance with a side trip into Boyd Town an old whaling settlement to have a look at the Seahorse Inn. Maybe a thought for the BMW club to have a weekend trip. Rates seem quite reasonable.

Back on the road to Cann River for lunch. While we were there a very loaded up K75 from Tassy arrived with a couple on their way to the Ulysses AGM in Brisbane. He told us he had owned the bike since new and had not dropped it until the day before. A first time for everything!

Nothing startling on the way to the Entrance . When we arrived the first thing to find was a bed. This proved a bit hard. When we did find one we were of the opinion we only wanted the bed for one night - not buy it, but it was Easter!

The next morning off to the mountains- stopping at Bruthen for petrol. After some fun with the bowsers and a yarn to a couple [Jenny and Craig] on 2 Triumphs who warned us of a large oil spill we were off to Omeo. It is a great ride up the valley.

We stopped at Omeo for drinks and met up with Jenny and Craig again. Craig happened to be the local Vet for the district. They convinced us it was a great road over Mt Hotham. It is a great run up past Dinner Plain through Hotham Village past the Crosscut Saw Range down to Harrietville. The views are magnificent - then into picturesque Bright in all its Autumn shades.

What a beautiful part of Australia. No vacancy signs everywhere here so we bunked down in the local pub at Porepunkah. A first class meal was provided at the pub that night.

The next morning packed up and heading home via Yackandandah for brunch. A very interesting old gold mining town.

Off to Albury for lunch with friends. Onto the road again for home with a stop at Murrumbateman at Driver Reviver for a leg stretch. Then home for the end of a great weekend covering 1300 Km in all.
